Despite the grey clouds and constant threat of rain, the
crowds were out for what is now one of the major motoring events of the year. The Goodwood
Festival of Speed is getting bigger and better every year with an impressive array of cars
on show as well as taking part in the time trials. Sadly this year was marred by two deaths. John Dawson-Damer's car crashed at the finish at over 100mph. The car demolished the finish gantry, overturned and then careered into two marshals seriously injuring one of them. The marshal later died in hospital. The car was a Lotus 63, a 31 year old 3 litre Cosworth V8 powered car with four wheel drive. It was one of only two cars in existance. (See here for 4WD race cars) There's little doubt that it will call into question the safety of running the hill climb competition at the Festival. The competition has developed over the last few years to the point where many high powered race and GT cars hurtle up the hill at well over 100mph. With only straw bales separating the huge crowds from the action, safety measures are sure to be under scrutiny. Saturday's racing was cancelled after the incident, although racing did recommence on the Sunday.
